What Kind of Coach Do I Actually Need?

Untangling the Alphabet Soup of Coaching Titles

You’ve decided a coach might help.
But now you’re faced with a wall of titles:
Executive Coach. Performance Coach. Life Coach. Leadership Coach. Business Coach. Personal Development Coach. One-to-One Coach.

And you’re wondering — does the title actually matter?

Short answer: Yes. And no.

🔹 No, because the most important thing in coaching isn’t the label, it’s the chemistry, trust, and methodology. You need someone who gets your world, challenges your thinking, and helps you build lasting momentum.
🔹 Yes, because different coaches bring different lenses and not all lenses are right for your situation.

For me, the first point is the most important.

Let’s cut through the noise.

Think of coaching like hiring a trainer.
You wouldn’t hire a marathon coach to help you build upper body strength. The wrong type of coach could be well-meaning… but mismatched.

For example:
✅ A Life Coach might help with purpose, values, or personal transitions, but not necessarily with boardroom politics or scaling a business.
✅ A Performance Coach helps you get out of your own way, sharpen focus, and stretch into your best self.
✅ An Executive Coach zooms out, looking at systems, leadership, influence, strategic alignment, and often works with senior leaders navigating big decisions.

So yes, the title can matter.

But here’s the twist…

Most great coaches aren’t confined by their title.
In fact, I’ve been called a Performance Coach, One-to-One Coach, and Leadership Mentor, yet I’m officially qualified as an Executive Coach.

And what really matters?
Outcomes.
Consistency.
Chemistry.

My advice?

Don’t overthink the label. Instead, ask:

  • What kind of change am I looking for?
  • Do I want to grow in performance, leadership, mindset… or all three?
  • Am I looking for clarity, strategy, or challenge?
  • Can this coach really walk beside me at my level?

A final thought for high performers:

If you’re already successful, smart, and self-driven, the right coach won’t tell you what to do. They’ll help you hear your own clarity, faster. That’s why I personally work with two coaches, one focused on performance, the other on executive strategy. Because I value the difference. I don’t want average. I want precision.
