Life Is Too Short: My Valuable Lesson

In 2012, a news story briefly covered the tragic loss of a father of two at a Jessie J concert, hosted by Blackberry. That man was my best friend, Phil Sherriff-taken far too soon. It’s a cliché, but it always seems to be the good ones.

Phil and I shared so much – interests, laughs, and even the occasional friendly debate. He was my sparring partner in life, challenging me and lifting me up. But more than anything, Phil taught me the most valuable lesson of all: live every minute like it’s your last.

The irony of this message isn’t lost on me. Yet knowing that Phil’s time here brought such positivity and strength, especially to his family, gives me comfort. His legacy, as bittersweet as it is, pushes me to live boldly.

For years, I held myself back. I let caution dictate my choices, carefully mapping out life plans for my 40s, 50s, and beyond. Then, in 2012, it hit me, What if I don’t make it to 50? Or even 40? Why live for tomorrow when today is here, waiting to be embraced?

It was the wake-up call I needed. With the guidance of an executive coach, I stopped living in the shadows of “someday” and started seizing each moment. I’m not frivolous, nor am I reckless, but I approach life with a renewed mindset; to extract the maximum from every day.

So, I leave you with this question: What’s holding you back? Whether it’s fear, caution, or the weight of “what ifs,” don’t let it keep you from living fully. Embrace today. Be bold. And as Phil taught me, live like every minute is your last.
