Dare to Be Different: Why Aren’t You Wearing a Suit?

A Generation Z lawyer I’m coaching has been making me smile recently.

As a proud member of Generation X, I’ve grown comfortable in my own skin over the years. But it’s only in the past few years that I’ve fully embraced walking, talking, and dressing how I truly want. Yet, even now, I occasionally I find myself asking, “Is this appropriate?”

What I admire about my Gen Z coachee is how effortless it all seems to him. Not only does he not care about conforming to expectations, he doesn’t even think about it. When we meet, he’s often dressed casually, in a polo shirt and trainers.

This attitude epitomizes what I love about Generation Z: they are always asking “why.”

  • Why do I need to dress a certain way?
  • Why do I need to work 60 hours a week?
  • Why should I keep working until pension age?

They’re challenging the status quo, rewriting the narrative, and charting their own paths.

As future leaders, authenticity will be critical—but above all else, adaptability is key, because every generation brings its own perspective.

I’ve heard murmurs from some who describe Millennials and Gen Z as “lazy.” Let’s set the record straight. These generations are not lazy—they simply don’t want to work in the same way their parents or grandparents did. They’re driven by knowledge, fuelled by a desire to explore the world, and motivated by making a difference.

For those who fear these changes—and let’s face it, many won’t admit they’re scared—my advice is simple: Embrace your fear. Instead of resisting, jump on board and enjoy the ride.

I would love to hear what you think – get in touch!

All the best, Laurence
