Business & Pleasure: Why I Take My Wife to Networking Events

A huge thank you to Rathbones Wealth Management for hosting such a brilliant evening last night. The conversations were rich, the setting was stunning, and the company was truly excellent.

One of the highlights for me? I got to bring my wife along.

Over the years, we’ve shared these kinds of moments in New York, Toronto, Geneva… and now, closer to home (Kendal). My wife is a doctor, and every time I invite her to something like this, her reaction is the same:
“Are you sure you want me to come? Won’t you want to talk business? Why would anyone want to talk to me?”

Every time, I smile. Because to me, and often to those we meet, she’s the most interesting person in the room. Intelligent, curious, grounded, and yes, beautiful too. But beyond that, people at these events are interested. Genuinely. Conversations become richer, more human, and more surprising when we mix our worlds a little.

As any parent knows, carving out time together, especially with two young kids, isn’t always easy. So, when business and pleasure align, and we can step into that space together, it’s something I really value.

It also gets me thinking:
Where do you take your partner?
Is it ever at networking or professional events?
And more importantly… should it be?

Personally, I think a little crossover between the professional and the personal can do wonders, not just for relationships, but for perspective too.
